New research indicates that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such treatments need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," recalled a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
