Minister Says MoD Examining Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Staff Advised to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible security risks posed by Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret matters in all vehicles.

Security Guidance for Defence Personnel

During a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss secret material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however noted that security is a concern in every contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, due to the increasing threats of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

This revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

The wider defence environment highlights the significance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of government operations, including transport usage to communication habits.
