Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Ever

The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible with a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
