Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
